• Playa del Carmen: This town is roughly 40 miles north of the airport. It’s an important transit point because ferries to Cozumel Island leave from here. You’ll also find lots of bus connections throughout the Yucatan Peninsula. The town itself has plenty of ground transportation options if you want to explore the coast.

Getting from Tulum Airport to the city center is pretty simple. You have several ways to do it, depending on what you prefer and your budget.

• Taxi and Private Transfers: Official taxis wait outside the terminal. They’ll take you straight to Tulum’s town center in about 10 to 15 minutes, traffic depending. Expect to pay somewhere between $15 and $25 USD. If you book a private transfer ahead of time, you get a fixed price and don’t have to worry about negotiating. This works especially well for groups.

• Rental Cars: Several car rental companies operate at the airport. Renting gives you freedom to explore Tulum and nearby areas on your schedule. The drive to the center uses Highway 307 and isn’t complicated. Good choice if you’re planning to visit multiple places.
