Major Transit Hubs near Harvard University

Once you’ve got your bags sorted, getting around from the university is easy because it’s close to major transport spots in Cambridge and Boston. You can travel locally or further afield without much trouble.

  • Harvard Station: This is the main hub, located right in Harvard Square. It’s a big stop on the MBTA’s Red Line subway. From here, you can quickly get to downtown Boston, Kendall Square (where MIT is), and other important places. Lots of MBTA buses also stop here, connecting you across Cambridge and to nearby towns.
  • South Station: This is Boston’s biggest travel center. You’ll find Amtrak trains, MBTA Commuter Rail, and major bus services here. You can get to South Station easily from Harvard Station by taking the Red Line subway. It usually takes about 15 to 20 minutes. It’s also the main place to catch trains if you’re heading to New York City, Washington, D.C., or other cities.

It’s quite convenient.

How to Get to the City Centre From Harvard University?

Getting from Harvard University in Cambridge to downtown Boston is quick and simple. There are several good ways to do it.

  • By Subway (The “T”): The fastest way is to hop on the MBTA Red Line from Harvard Station. Take a train going south, and it will drop you off at key downtown stations like Park Street (close to Boston Common and the Freedom Trail) or Downtown Crossing (good for shopping and other subway lines). This trip takes about 15 minutes.
  • By Bus: You can also catch several MBTA buses from Harvard Square that go into different parts of Boston. However, these are usually slower than the subway because of traffic. For example, the #1 bus goes down Massachusetts Avenue, passing through the Back Bay area.
  • By Taxi or Ride-Sharing: Services like Uber and Lyft are readily available. A trip to downtown Boston usually takes between 15 and 30 minutes, but it really depends on traffic. It will also cost more than taking public transport.

See? Easy peasy.
