Chicago Midway International Airport, also known as Midway or Midway Airport, is an airport in Chicago, Illinois, USA, southwest of the city, eight miles from the Chicago Loop. The airport is operated by the Chicago Airport System, which oversees operations at Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Gary / Chicago International Airport.
It was the busiest airport in the world in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, when air travel was a rare and exciting event. Before O’Hare arrived on the scene, the 75-year-old Midway Airport was Chicago’s aerial theater; exciting, glamorous, and daring.
It opened as the Chicago Municipal Airport on May 8, 1926. It became a popular attraction almost immediately when people flocked to watch the planes take flight and land.
A symbol of the airport’s glamor was The Cloud Room, the terminal’s famous restaurant run by Marshall Field & Company. Guests enjoyed their meals and floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic views of the gardens and plans.
Midway now has eight low-cost airlines. The major airline, American and Northwest, also operate there. And the city of Chicago is in the middle of a $722 million renovation project. As battles continue to expand O’Hare or build a third airport, Midway’s health remains strong.
