East Harlem, north of the Upper East Side, located in Upper Manhattan, is also known as El Barrio. One of the most important historical sites in the area is Langston Hughes House, the place where the poet Langston Hughes resided between 1947 and 1967. Another place not to be missed is definitely the Harlem Courthouse, a Gothic-Romanesque revival building designed and built between 1891 and 1893 by the architects Thom & Wilson.

• Soul Food . Try Soul Food for traditional African-American cuisine. The food is like what you eat in the South (Louisiana, Mississippi etc.). For example, fried chicken, sweet potatoes, beans. These dishes are not suitable for those who would like to lose weight!

• Red Rooster Harlem. This is a trendy new restaurant on 126th Street and Lenox Avenue. Obama did a fundraiser there. Usually, you have to reserve table weeks in advance.

• Sylvias Restaurant. On the same street as Red Rooster Harlem, you can eat real Soul Food here. Other notable restaurants are Shrine on Adam Clayton Jr. Boulevard and 134th Street.

Where to go?

Harlem is also renowned for its musical history. There is always a lot to see, like souvenir shops, park, and others.

• You should definitely visit the famous Apollo Theater on 125th Street between Frederic Douglas and 7th Avenue. Every week there is an Amateur Night to discover new talents. We hoot or applaud to decide who wins. Most Jazz artists started their careers in Harlem.

• Going on a Gospel Tour in Harlem is a popular activity. You should reserve your place well in advance.

• Since Harlem is located just north of Central Park, you will need to use the subway station to get to Midtown Manhattan. To get back to Harlem at night, it is safer to take a taxi. If you still want to book any hotel in Harlem, Aloft Harlem is a good choice.
